Introduction
The ‘loose papers’ left behind, on her death in 1697, by Grace, Lady Gethin (née Norton) included twenty-nine brief essays. These were subsequently published in 1699 as Reliquiæ Gethinianæ. About a quarter of these essays were actually her abridgements of, or notes on, essays by Sir Francis Bacon. None of Lady Gethin's papers are known to survive today.
